You have a ticket for a concert or a match at San Siro and you are wondering where to stay. It is a more sensible question than it sounds: the stadium sits on the western edge of Milan, a long way from the centre, and when tens of thousands of people leave at once the metro turns into a funnel. Anyone who has been through the aftermath of a San Siro concert knows that getting back across the city can take well over an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people start by searching for hotels near San Siro, and the logic is the same whether you end up in a hotel or an apartment: what matters is which side of the queue you are on when the event ends. This guide sets out which areas actually work, how long each one takes, how the journey home goes, and when staying in the centre still makes more sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to San Siro, and getting back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The stadium is served by the M5, the lilac line, at San Siro Stadio: it is the most direct route and leaves you practically at the turnstiles. The alternative is tram 16, which runs out from the centre \u2014 slower, but often less crowded on the way there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey out is not the problem. The journey back is. When tens of thousands of people leave together, the metro entrance backs up and it takes several minutes just to reach the platform \u2014 sometimes a great deal longer after concerts, which end at a single moment and later than a football match. That is why staying nearby has concrete value: you walk out of the stadium and go home on foot while everyone else is still queueing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are staying in the centre, factor in the wait and check the last departure: after a concert that finishes late, the margin can be tighter than you would expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On big event nights ATM often extends the service on the M5, but last-train times vary by day and by line and need checking on the ATM website<\/a> on the day itself. By far the most convenient choice for an event: you walk home, with no metro and no queues. The area is residential and quiet, with the everyday shops you need and not much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limitation is that it is not an area you would visit for its own sake: away from event days the evenings are quiet and the choice of restaurants is thin. Ideal for a night or two around the event, less so for a sightseeing trip.<\/p>\n\n\n
