Milan for Trade Fairs: Where to Stay and How to Get to Rho Fiera

Coming to Milan for a trade fair is a different proposition from coming on holiday: what matters is reaching the hall without wasting time, having a connection that works in the evening, and being able to stay several nights without spending a fortune. And it helps to know something that surprises most people on their first trip: the main exhibition centre is not in Milan at all. It is at Rho, outside the city.

This guide explains where to stay given that fact, how you actually get to the exhibition centre, and how far ahead to book so you are not left without a bed.

The most convenient areas for Rho Fiera

There is really only one rule: stay on the M1, the red line. It is the line that runs straight to Rho Fiera without a change, and fifteen minutes on a direct metro beats five kilometres less with two changes. That is why we recommend the Fiera-Lotto-Amendola area more often than the centre: you arrive sooner, you pay less, and in the evening you are still a few stops from the Duomo.

Getting to Rho Fiera

The exhibition centre is served by the M1 (red line), terminus Rho Fiera: the route is direct from the centre and from the western side of the city, and on fair days it is the most reliable way to arrive on time.

The alternative is the suburban rail service, which stops at Rho Fiera station and suits anyone arriving from outside Milan or from the airports without passing through the centre.

Driving is possible but rarely worth it: on busy days the car parks fill early and the approach roads are heavy going.

During the major events the M1 service is usually stepped up and Rho Fiera Milano station adds calls: check timetables and extra services on the ATM website and on Fiera Milano’s own.

When to book, and why so far ahead

Milan’s trade fairs fill the city. In the weeks of the big events — the Salone del Mobile above all — availability runs out months in advance and prices rise noticeably across the whole western side and the centre.

The advice is to book as soon as you have the dates of the fair, without waiting to confirm the details of your trip: in those weeks, leaving it late means either paying a great deal or sleeping a long way out.

Outside the headline events the picture is far calmer, and a few weeks’ notice is plenty.

Apartment or hotel for a trade fair?

For a trip of several nights an apartment has concrete advantages: the cost per night drops compared with a hotel, you can have breakfast and dinner in when you come back late and tired, you have room to work, and there is a washing machine — which on a long trip is not a detail. If two or three colleagues are travelling together, the difference becomes substantial.

A hotel is still preferable in one case: a single night, arriving late and leaving early. There, a reception desk open at any hour and breakfast included are worth more than a kitchen.

The Milan trade fair calendar

Along the M1, which runs straight to Rho Fiera without a change: the Fiera-Lotto-Amendola area is the best balance of travel time, price and somewhere decent to spend the evening. The centre is convenient but dearer and further out; Rho itself is the choice for cutting travel to nothing.

How long does it take to reach Rho Fiera from the centre of Milan?
