Italian Grand Prix 2026 at Monza: Getting There and Where to Stay

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is one of the best-loved dates on the Formula 1 calendar, and every September it draws tens of thousands of fans from around the world to Milan and the towns around it. The Autodromo Nazionale di Monza — the “Temple of Speed” — sits north of Milan, and for anyone travelling in, the city remains the most practical base: more connections, more choice of accommodation, more to do away from the track.

The race weekend

The Grand Prix runs across a weekend, from Friday practice through Saturday qualifying to the race on Sunday. If you want the whole experience rather than just the race, allow three nights, Friday to Sunday — which is also why demand for accommodation concentrates so hard on those dates.

Getting to the Monza circuit from Milan

On Grand Prix days the easiest and quickest way to reach the circuit is by train: Monza is about twenty minutes from Milan on regional services, and dedicated shuttle buses run from Monza station to the circuit entrance. Driving, on those days, means queues and distant car parks: train plus shuttle is almost always faster.

That is why basing yourself in Milan works well: you take the train out to Monza for the racing and have the city for the rest of the time.

Where to stay for the Italian Grand Prix

Two strategies, depending on what you are after:

• Base yourself in Milan, near a station with regional trains to Monza (Porta Garibaldi, Centrale, Lambrate): you reach the track quickly and have the city in the evening. It is the more flexible choice, especially if the trip is not only about the race.
• In Monza or immediately around it: a step from the circuit, with the least travelling on the busiest days. Availability, though, is limited and goes extremely early.

For a weekend of several nights, often in a group, an apartment beats a hotel: you split the cost, you can come back at any hour after a day at the track, and there is room to be together.

When to book

The Grand Prix is one of the year’s peaks in demand for Milan and Monza alike: availability on the race weekend runs out well in advance and prices rise. The rule is to book as soon as the official race date is published, months ahead. Leave it late and what remains is scarce, expensive and far away.
